Irfan Waheed Usmani’s academic work brings together teaching, historical research, scholarly writing and research supervision. His career at Government College University Lahore extends from Lecturer to Assistant Professor, accompanied by earlier experience in journalism and editorial work.
His teaching has covered an unusually broad historical range—from civilizations, Islamic history, medieval and colonial South Asia to political economy, historiography, research methodology, Pakistan’s political history, world history and international relations.
Alongside teaching, his scholarship has explored leftist movements in Pakistan, literary and political radicalism, Kashmir, colonialism, historiography, political history and the relationship between intellectual movements and the societies in which they emerge.
Across these roles runs a consistent academic concern: how historical knowledge is built, interpreted, written and passed forward.

A curriculum vitae records degrees, appointments, publications, awards and dates. It cannot fully record the conversations that changed a student’s direction, the thesis improved through patient guidance, or the habit of intellectual honesty passed quietly from teacher to student.
